After his climactic battle in Bayan Knights #4, MASO finally makes his solo-comic debut in the pages of Ramil Ibay's MASO #1. Shunned by the masses and the local superhero community, Mar Ibarra must deal with the repercussions of his actions in pages of Bayan Knights where he served as a member of the super villain team Bangis.

Maso creator Ramil Ibay weaves an intricate web that I'm guessing he's been plotting for a while. The details he puts in each of the characters that appear in the issue are amazing. I don't want to give away too much of the plot, but we also get to meet some of the other superheroes like Maso's mentor Maharlika and the duo of Lolo Thunder and Kid Lighting. Their dossiers that Ramil included in the issue only shows the creative potential of this world, Maso's world. So if you get the chance, make sure you get a copy of this. It's worth every cent.

Omi Remalante Jr.'s TALIM # 1

Last Saturday's 6th annual KOMIKON saw the debut of Omi Remalante's TALIM - a knife wielding vigilante haunted by the memories of a dead girl that ironically he can't remember. Written by fan favorite RH Quilantang, the issue gives us a glimpse into the mind of a brutal and probably unstable vigilante and his one man campaign for answers and vengeance. The issue shows us there are no shades of gray. There is only black and white. But where does out hero stand?

I like the pacing of this book. How we get to first see Talim as a normal person watching TV before we dive into the the actual action. I like how the flashback and narration during the action was handled. It didn't feel forced. In fact, it just cements the idea that this guy is really out of his mind. Omi Remalante handles the art chores for his creation. His cool use of shadows make the action a little more gritty. His style is the perfect fit for this dark tale.

The Cape: The series, set in the fictional metropolis of Palm City, follows a innocent cop (David Lyons) who has been framed for a crime he did not commit and then left for dead after he is caught. He takes on the guise of The Cape, his son's favorite superhero. Vowing to get rid of the corruption that has taken over both the city and the police force

No Ordinary Family: Michael Chiklis (The Shield) stars as the head of the Powells, a family who suddenly and remarkably all inherit superpowers after their plane crashes into the Amazon River. You’ve read/seen the Fantastic Four, it’s like that sans the Cosmic Ray and Galactus. Julie Benz (Dexter), Romany Malco also star.

Nikita: A spy thriller based on the 1997 television series La Femme Nikita. The series stars Maggie Q as Nikita, a smoking hot assassin who has gone off the grid and is now making it her mission to bring down Division, the government agency that recruited her. Lyndsy Fonseca and Shane West also star. The trailer gave me a serious ALIAS flashback (specially the part where her boyfriend — named Daniel ala Sydney’s Daniel Hecht — was killed by the people she worked for.)

Hellcats: Bring it On comes to the small screen in this dramedy about the hellish world of college cheerleading. The show is based on the book Cheer: Inside the Secret World of College Cheerleaders by Kate Torgovnick. Hellcats stars Disney darling Ashley Tisdale, as well as Alyson Michalka (Bandslam) and Matt Barr. Looks good.

$#*! My Dad Says: Or "Bleep My Dad Says" if you will. Created from Justin Halpern's popular Twitter feed, this new sitcom stars William Shatner as the opiniated and cranky dad, with Will Sasso and Nicole Sullivan rounding out the cast. The role of the younger son, Henry (the one collecting the $#*!), is currently being recast.

Better Together: A romantic comedy from Shana Goldberg-Meehan that revolves around three different relationships from three different couples that are all intertwined with each other in one family. Starring Joanna Garcia (Privileged), Jennifer Finnigan, Josh Cooke, Jake Lacy, Kurt Fuller and Debra Jo Rupp. I’ll be watching this mainly for Joanna Garcia eye-candy, but it looks like Debra Jo Rupp aka Foreman’s mom from “That ’70s Show” will be stealing the spotlight with her awesome one-liners.

Happy Endings: A single-camera comedy about how the breakup of a couple (Elisha Cuthbert and Zachary Knighton) shakes up their group of friends in more ways than one. Happy Endings will air as a midseason replacement and also stars Eliza Coupe (Scrubs: Med School), Adam Pally, Casey Wilson and Damon Wayans Jr.

Mr. Sunshine: A midseason replacement starring Matthew Perry as a manager of a San Diego sports arena who is in the throes of a midlife crisis. A cutting dark comedy, Mr. Sunshine also stars Allison Janney (The West Wing) and Andrea Anders (Better Off Ted). Perry is also the executive producer, and he penned the pilot.

Running Wilde: Will Arnett and a couple of the guys behind Arrested Development bring you this quirky romantic comedy about a wealthy and slightly moronic playboy (Will) who sets his eyes on winning the heart of his childhood love, played by Keri Russell. It's told from the POV of her 12-year-old daughter.

I've already heard about CALLWORK from Markus months and KOMIKONs ago. It's a collection of comic strips by Hazel Manzano which are about the life of a Call Center Agent. So last Saturday, I finally gave in and bought myself a copy. I also got the second book entitled Proud Callboy. It’s hilarious. I coudn’t put it down. I can’t believe I finished reading both books in one seating. It’s that good.

Bayan Knights # 4

Everyone’s in it now. The issue is narrated by Sarhento Sagrado via a personal log entry about the recent events in the Bayan Knights’ universe. Two things happen in this issue: first, the encounter with the BANGIS team is resolved. Second and more importantly, the final chess pieces are gathered.

The main story also reads like a sort of encyclopedia - re-introducing us to characters and giving hints about the new ones, reminding us that this is a very RICH universe and full of potential. Most noticeable about the latest release is the art which was digitally painted by Gilbert Monsanto. Yes, I said painted — and NOT toned. Though I find some of the roughs a little bit “rough,” GM still managed to wow me with a lot of wonderful pin-up styled shots and paneling. And can you believe how awesome that Harvey Tolibao (Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic) cover is? Check out the website for availability and ordering information.

When I was a kid, I grew up reading Filipino FUNNY Komiks. Turns out, most of my generation did. So, it should really come as no surprise that someone sooner or later would be doing something like this.

Created by Jp Cuison and Dennis Nierra, they describe this as "Funny Komiks on acid... Full of gore, sex and drugs presented in a very kiddie-like manner." They actually took characters from Combatron, Tinay Pinay, Tomas & Kulas and put them in lewd and childish situations. Issue 2 includes parodies of other icons from our childhood like Shaider and the Mighty Thor. Juvinile and delinquent, the books are actually funny and have managed to make me laugh out loud -- to the chagrin of my officemates. Below is the Mighty-T motion comic.

InsomNOIR: Prelude To Manila Man

Created by RH Quilantang, this book as the title suggest is a prelude to Manila Man's world. This introduction started off serious, ironically narrated through APOG's eyes. He's that broody looking dude on the cover, smoking a cigarette and wearing the "action-star" leather jacket. He is humorless and he is also blind.

Halfway through, Manila Man finally appears and he's the complete opposite of Apog -- funny as hell and may I say a little bit out of his mind. There's this one bit, where he's calling out the names of his "punches" but I think I'll keep that to myself. (Those of you who read it knows what I'm talking about.) There's also this letter on page 17. I'll admit that while reading the first paragraph, I thought it was just RH goofing off on his credits page but it's actually written by Manila Man's alter ego John Leysi.

Let's talk about the art: RH takes advantage of the NOIR in the title, using the blacks and whites to full effect. I love the hatchings he did for the shadows. It shows how much time and effort he put into making this comic book. So grab a copy. And when I say grab, I mean buy.

UNSTOPPABLE: Volume One

Went to Komikon today and got my hand on issues 1 thru 4 of Hubert Khan Michael's Unstoppable. And since I've already reviewed issue 1 which was posted on his deviantArt, I'll be jumping right into issue's 2 thru 4.

In these installments, we learn more about Unstoppable's civilian life and his support system - the people who shares his secret. Although I found the interaction between him and these people quite entertaining, I also found it just a tinsy bit odd. Maybe it's just me but aren't you supposed to keep your superheroing from people you care about to keep them safe?

Anyways, the plot tickens even more as we learn about the mastermind behind the Terrobot attack in issue one. He's a mysterious fella called Doctrine and he wants Unstoppable to join him. I'll be stopping here as I don't want to spoil the secrets, twists, turns and switcheroos in the issues. Yep, Hubert knows how to keep a story fresh. Everytime I think I know what's going on he throws me a curveball. And believe me, I can sniff a story a mile away. But in case you don't, here's the blurb written by Gerry Alanguilan on issue 3: "...Storytelling is excellent... and the transitions between scenes can sometimes be very clever... A very good and promising comic book!"

And although the covers say “X of 4”, there’s going to be more! As it turns out, these four issues are just Act 1 of a 3-part act. I say, BRING IT ON.

Kamen Rider DEN-O: All Forms

By swiping a Rider Pass across the SetTouch in his belt, Kamen Rider Den-O is able to pass through four basic forms, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Each of the forms is based on a specific mythological hero along with motifs relating to the respective legends.

The Den-O Belt works by drawing in free energy from the surrounding area, allowing it to generate the Den-O suit, which consists of a soft but durable material called Aura Skin and tough armor called Aura Armor. As the name implies, Aura Skin and Armor are attuned to the wearer's individual aura; because of Ryotaro's weak will, he can only generate the basic Plat Form. However, possession by Imagin causes the Aura Skin and Armor to reconfigure themselves into a form that matches the Imagin's will, as well as generating a facemask called Denkamen.

PLAT FORM, Den-O's most basic form, is a black and white form that is activated when first initiating a transformation using a Rider Pass. If the corresponding color-coded button is selected, then by swiping the Pass once more, a form change will occur. Ryotaro rarely uses this form, as it does not have sufficient armor and pales in comparison to the abilities of the other forms. Only when he does not want the assistance of the Taros or is transitioning into Liner Form, does he use this form. Plat Form is designed and named after a railway platform.

SWORD FORM is Kamen Rider Den-O's first form, used while Ryotaro is possessed by Momotaros. When in Sword Form, he uses the DenGasher as a standard sword-style weapon. Sword Form is the most balanced of all his forms and most used, possibly because of Momotaros' prominence among the other Imagin. Every so often, Momotaros will develop a new Hissatsu Attack that he uses to finish off Imagin, and has developed Parts 1, 2, 2-dash, 3, 5, Special Version, and the other-Imagin-assisted Final Version, although parts 2, 3, and 5 are essentially identical. Sword Form also has a triple roundhouse Rider Kick that Momotaros refers to as his "Super Finishing Attack". The eyes on the Sword Form's Denkamen resemble two halves of a peach, the fruit associated with the story of Momotaro, the Peach Boy, upon which Sword Form is based.

ROD FORM is Kamen Rider Den-O's second form, used while Ryotaro is possessed by Urataros. When in Rod Form, the DenGasher is able to transform into a rod-style weapon. Rod Form gains the ability to perform underwater, extra protection, and increased kicking power but suffers a loss of physical powers and jumping height. This form is one of the least used of Den-O's forms, as Urataros rarely fights. However, when the fight occurs in the proximity of water or if the other Imagin are unable to fight, Urataros will assist with his fishing skills. Rod Form is also only one of two forms that uses a Rider Kick as part of its standard finisher, pinning the enemy with the rod as a harpoon before executing the flying side kick. The Aura Armor and Denkamen resembles a sea turtle, the animal associated with the legend of Urashima Taro, upon which Rod Form is based.

AXE FORM is Kamen Rider Den-O's third form, used while Ryotaro is possessed by Kintaros. When in Axe Form, the DenGasher is able to transform into an axe for short ranged attacks. Axe Form gains increased punching power and defense but suffers a loss of speed and kicking power. This form is physically the strongest of the Den-O forms, due to Kintaros's own brute strength. Axe Form's Aura Armor is golden yellow and the motif is that of an axe, both symbols prevalent in the story of Kintaro, the Golden Boy, upon which Axe Form is based. The Denkamen is also shaped like the Kanji word for "gold".

GUN FORM is Kamen Rider Den-O's fourth form, used while Ryotaro is possessed by Ryutaros. When in Gun Form, the DenGasher is able to transform into a gun for short range and long range attacks. Gun Form displays an increase in speed, power, and defense, easily making it the most superior of the four basic forms. However, Gun Form tends to cause more collateral damage than the other forms because its high-powered ammunition and Ryutaros' low precision. Ryutaros incorporates break-dancing moves into his fighting style in Gun Form, making his movements somewhat unpredictable. The motif of Gun Form is that of a dragon, the creature associated with the story of Tatsu no Ko Taro, Taro the Dragon Boy, upon which Gun Form is based.

WING FORM is Den-O's fifth form, used while Ryotaro is possessed by Sieg. Den-O Wing Form uses the DenGasher as two separate weapons, a boomerang (Sword and Grip) and a hand-axe (Axe and Gun). In order to access Wing Form, the golden Wing Buckle must be placed over the Terminal Buckle. This form gives Den-O an increase in mobility even greater than what Gun Form could provide. When in Wing FOrm, the Aura Skin becomes gold and the Denkamen visor becomes swan-like. Den-O also receives wings. These are associated with the bird of the story of Swan Lake, upon which Wing Form is based.

CLIMAX FORM wielding the DenGasherClimax Form is Den-O's sixth and strongest form in the series and is accessed by entering the code 3-6-9-# into the Climax Cellphone K-Taros and attaching it to the Den-O Belt. Climax Form is basically a stronger version of Sword Form that incorporates the Denkamen of the other three primary Den-O forms onto various parts of the armor. Due to the nature of Climax Form, the Taros need to work as a unit to fight, and their strengths are incorporated into Climax Form. Rod Form's mask is on the right shoulder with Urataros controlling the right arm, Axe Form's mask is on the left shoulder with Kintaros controlling the left arm, and Gun Form's mask is on the chest with Ryutaros control the legs. The three masks can travel along the tracks on Climax Form's body to align on the leg or arm to enter Kick Mode or Punch Mode and perform "Charge and Up" attacks.

LINER FORM wielding the DenKamen SwordLiner Form is Den-O's final form in the series. In order to transform into Liner Form, the Rider Pass must be put in a slot in the back of the blade of the DenKamen Sword. This form, solely controlled by Ryotaro with the Imagin using the DenKamen Sword as a means of communication, is themed around DenLiner in transformation and attack. Ryotaro also utilizes each Imagin's respective fighting style when their mask is selected on the DenKamen Sword - Kintaros' strength and defense in KinAx mode, and Ryutaros' breakdancing techniques in RyuGun mode. Although considerably versatile, Liner Form does not hold any significant strengths over Den-O's other forms, which sometimes leaves Ryotaro at a disadvantage.

It’s weird to get a quote from a dream. The weirder part is when your dream is an episode of a killer-of-the-week type procedural. You see, the quote was said by the lead female detective in my dream, from a note written by the victim’s daughter. So did they catch the killer? Yeah, they did. The magician did it (not the butler). He actually severed the head of the victim and would have used it in his act if they hadn’t stop him.

KAMEN RIDER CHALICE aka Hajime Aikawa (played by Ryouji Morimoto)
Quick Info: A mysterious man who uses the sealed Category Ace of Hearts' CHANGE Mantis to become CHALICE. He lives at Jacaranda Cafe with the Kurihara family. He is an Undead. He thinks less of humans but will always risk his life to save Haruka Kurihara and her daughter Amane.

Black JOKER UNDEAD is Chalice's true form, the most powerful of the Undead; the 53rd Existence. Unsealed around the time the others were released, Joker battled the Mantis Undead and assumed his form, taking on the name of Chalice. He later seals the Human Undead who willingly surrenders to him, using the card to assume human form. The result of using both of these cards for most of the time resulted with both the Human Undead's compassion for life and the Mantis Undead's fighting spirit collectively suppressing Chalice's natural impulse as the Joker. However, some of the Undead who knew his true identity made attempts to dispose of him as his victory in the battle royale would mark the end of all life on Earth.

Kamen Rider Chalice: ACE FORM is not similar to the BOARD Riders' since Chalice is not a Kamen Rider produced by a Rider System. He is in fact the manifestation of the Mantis Undead. The Joker mimics the form, attributes and power of the Mantis Undead by using the ♥A: "Change Mantis" Rouse Card in the Chalice Rouzer embedded in his body. He is basically superior to the BOARD Riders in every respect, making him a lethal adversary to either the Undead or the Humans.

Kamen Rider Chalice: WILD CHALICE is the ultimate form of Chalice, which merges the power of the ♥K: "Evolution Paradoxa" with ♥A: "Change Mantis" to unify the powers of the other Rouse Cards of the Heart Suit. Outside of its combat practicality, Wild Chalice serves an even more vital purpose to Chalice. Thanks to the additional power of ♥, Wild Chalice can suppress the power of the Joker and effectively subdue its influence. To that effect, Wild Chalice becomes an extension of the Joker's "Trump" effect and can harness the powers of all Rouse Cards in the form of the "Wild Card".

Weapons and Equipment: Chalice’s primary armament is the Chalice Arrow, a reproduction of the bow and arrow weapon originally used by the Mantis Undead. It proves to be a truly versatile weapon, facilitating many combat functions; the basic projectile "bow" mode which volleys out waves of laser bolts; a "knuckle" mode normally reserved for melee engagement; and the "blade" mode which utilizes the blade-like joints of the Chalice Arrow as lethal weapons. Being a genuine Undead weapon, the Chalice Arrow does not have the AP cache feature to replicate the effects of Rouze Cards. When in Wild form, Chalice gains two kama-like weapons that resemble mantis claws called Wild Slasher. These can be interlocked with the Chalice Arrow to assemble the Wild Rouzer which is able to shoot out a beam of energy at its target. Chalice's Rider Machine is called the Shadow Chaser

KAMEN RIDER GARREN aka Sakuya Tachibana (played by Kousei Amano)
Quick Info: The first human to use the Rider System. He uses the sealed Category Ace Of Diamonds' CHANGE Stag to become GARREN. By the start of the Blade series, Tachibana begins to suffer a form of cellular degeneration and thus believed the Rider System to be flawed.

Kamen Rider Garren: ACE FORM is the default transformation of all Rider Systems. Rider System-01 harnesses the DNA of the Stag Undead from the ♦A: "Change Stag" Rouse Card and fuses that DNA with Sakuya Tachibana's DNA via the Garren Buckle Rider System, transforming him into Kamen Rider Garren. This Rider form has no distinguishing capabilities or attributes apart from any other Rider except its gunslinger-oriented design and its ability to modify its capabilities with Rouse Cards.

Kamen Rider Garren: JACK FORM is a combat extension of the Rider System which harnesses the power of the ♦Jack: "Fusion Peacock" via the Rouse Absorber. Initiating Jack Form transmogrifies the Rider Armor with the attributes and characteristics of the Peacock Undead DNA, as well as enhancing Garren's combat perimeters. This form imparts a number of enhancements; the first being the enhancement of the Garrenrouzer with a bayonet attachment. This imparts a limited, but much-needed, melee capacity to the otherwise projectile-oriented weapon. The second advancement is the addition of reinforced golden-armor plating which increase resilience to direct-impact damage. But the most drastic modification is the inclusion of wings, which enables flight for the Rider.

Kamen Rider Garren: KING FORM never made an appearance in the series or movie. Theoretically, Garren would initiate this transformation by using the ♦K: "Evolution Giraffa" Rouse Card in conjunction with the ♦Q: "Absorb Serpent" Rouse Card that has been set into the Rouse Absorber.

Weapons and Equipment: Garren’s primary armament is the Garren Rouzer, a hi-tech gun which serves as a weapon for combat and storage unit for Rouse Cards, including Proper Blanks. It has a built-in 'rousing' technology, which enables Garren to use the sealed Undead's power. After activating Jack Form, the Garren Rouzer gains an enhancement in the form of a blade forming on the barrel to let the weapon be used for close-range attacks. Garren's Rider Machine is called the Red Rhombus.

Kamen Rider BLADE

10,000 years ago, 52 Undead were created to fight in a free-for-all battle royale known as the Battle Fight. The 52 Undead represented 52 different species and battled so they can wish for the species they represent to rule the Earth. Humans won and the Undead were sealed. In the present, human archaeologists discover the sealed Undead and sets them free by mistake. Once free, a new Battle Fight begins. A group of humans develop the Rider System in order to fight and re-seal the Undead.

KAMEN RIDER BLADE aka Kazuma Kenzaki (played by Tsubaki Takayuki)
Quick Info: A young man chosen by BOARD to use the sealed Category Ace of Spades' CHANGE Beetle to become Kamen Rider BLADE. At the age of 11, Kenzaki was orphaned when his family died in a freak fire accident. The powerlessness he felt would forever serve as the motivation to try and protect the defenseless.

KAMEN RIDER GARREN aka Sakuya Tachibana (played by Kousei Amano)
Quick Info: The first human to use the Rider System. He uses the sealed Category Ace Of Diamonds' CHANGE Stag to become GARREN. By the start of the series, Tachibana begins to suffer a form of cellular degeneration and thus believed the Rider System to be flawed.

KAMEN RIDER CHALICE aka Hajime Aikawa (played by Ryouji Morimoto)
Quick Info: A mysterious man who uses the sealed Category Ace of Hearts' CHANGE Mantis to become CHALICE. He lives at Jacaranda Cafe with the Kurihara family. He is an Undead. He thinks less of humans but will always risk his life to save Haruka Kurihara and her daughter Amane.

KAMEN RIDER LEANGLE aka Mutsuki Kamijou (played by Takahiro Hōjō)
Quick Info: A troubled 17 year old high school kid, he was chosen by the Category Ace of Clubs to use the CHANGE Spider to become LEANGLE. Though reluctant at first, he gains a thirst for power as the Category Ace takes over.

Kamen Rider Blade: ACE FORM is the default transformation of all Rider Systems. Rider System-02 harnesses the DNA of the Beetle Undead from the ♠A: "Change Beetle" Rouse Card and fuses that DNA with Kazuma Kenzaki's DNA via the BlayBuckle Rider System, transforming him into Kamen Rider Blade. This Rider form has no distinguishing capabilities or attributes apart from the other Riders except its melee-oriented design and its ability to modify its capabilities with Rouse Cards.

Kamen Rider Blade: JACK FORM is a combat extension of the Rider System which harnesses the power of the ♠J: "Fusion Eagle" via the Rouse Absorber. Initiating Jack Form transmogrifies the Rider Armor with the attributes and characteristics of the Eagle Undead DNA, as well as enhancing Blade's combat perimeters. This form imparts a number of enhancements; the first being the enhancement of the Blayrouzer through a blade extension. The second advancement is the addition of reinforced golden-armor plating which increase resilience to direct-impact damage. But the most drastic modification is the inclusion of wings, which enables flight for the Rider.

Kamen Rider Blade: KING FORM is the ultimate combat extension of the Rider System. Using the Rouse Absorber, this transformation is initiated using the ♠K's Evolution King in conjunction with the ♠Q's Absorb Queen. The King Form addresses many issues with Blade's combat capabilities such as defense. However, with all these improvements, Blade's King Form suffers from one glaring flaw: Kazuma Kenzaki himself. Initial specifications intended only for Blade to extend its combat capacities with the DNA of the ♠K: "Evolution Caucasus", but due to Kenzaki's unusually high fusion coefficiency, the system exceeded perimeters and exploited a disastrous glitch - activating the King Form extension initiates the fusion of not just one, but ALL 13 sealed Undead associated with a particular card-suit. Extended activity in this form will raise the subject's fusion coefficiency exponentially, ultimately mutating into a Joker-type Undead.

That One Scene...

I was just watching the season 2 finale of the ABC Family show The Secret Life Of The American Teenager and this one scene/revelation blew me away. Ironically, it has nothing to do with the storyline.

SPOILER: It was the wedding reception for Mr. Boikovitch and Betty and the scene was just characters talking. In the background, you can hear the "wedding singer" singing "Fly Me To The Moon" which I noticed because it was really well sung. And then one character asks where Madison was, which is not really that big of a deal because Madison's just some minor player I've grown to ignore. But then they reveal her singing. At first I thought she was just lip syncing but one Google search later reveals Renee Olstead to actually be an accomplished singer in real life. Moments later she follows up her background singing with "Last Dance" and "Someone To Watch Over Me". And just like that Renee Olstead made the list. My GEEK list. I'm surprised I can still be surprised.

PINTADOS (1999)

Not really a Tokusatsu series per se. Pintados was a live action series produced by Philippines' GMA Network in 1999. It seems to be a combination of western superhero culture and the Japanese sentai tropes.

After several rich Filipino families become victims of terrible crimes, they agree to set up and fund a foundation to battle the evildoers. Under the command of "Guro", an unsanctioned agency of the government sets up a clandestine crime fighting unit. Each of the members is them self a victim of heinous crime. This elite unit taken from all walks of life take a leaf from Filipino warriors of old, and cloak themselves in armor, ethnic war paint and tattoos, taking the name PINTADOS (Painted Ones). Opposing them is the army of the human/reptile hybrid Katana.

DATU aka Daniel Cervantes (played by Michael Flores)
Quick Info: A former Navy SEAL, he joins the Pintados after his father is gunned down by the military's equivalent of the Mafia. A by-the-book individual, he works undercover as a journalist and begins to fall in love with another reporter investigating the Pintados. As DATU (a tribal leader), he is able to project an "Enerhiyang Alon" (Energy Wave) capable of knocking people out or blasting through immobile objects. A deadly swordsman with his Kris, he is also a master of Jui-Jistu.

DIWATA aka Reewa Zulueta (played by Angelika de la Cruz)
Quick Info: When her mother and sister were kidnapped, she dutifully pays the ransom. In spite of this, the kidnappers still killed them, spurring Reewa to train herself and join the Pintados. DIWATA (fairy) is the team's second-in-command, after Datu. Skilled in Thai kick boxing and the use of her neutraliser whip, Diwata is also armed with the "Salaming Salamanka" (Magic Mirror), a holographic imager capable of emitting both convincing holograms and holographic forcefields.

TATTO aka Antonio Sto. Domingo (played by Vandolf Quizon)
Quick Info: An orphan, he is adopted by Guro who recognized his high intellect. He trained him to become a member of Pintados, working as their technology and research specialist. At 14, TATTO (tatoo) is the youngest member of the team. In combat, he uses a taser blaster and a titanium yo-yo. However his main power comes from his stealth shield generator called the "Kalasag ng Hunyango" (Chameleon Shield).

MAYUMI aka Maya Feliciano (played by Assunta da Rossi)
Quick Info: Joined the Pintados after her family was killed in a random act of violence, MAYUMI (gentle or ladylike) is skilled in the art of Aikido and the use of nunchukus. She is also armed with "Dilaw na Apoy" (Yellow Flame).

KIDLAT aka Pido Zapata (played by Sherwin Ordoñez)
Quick Info: The last member of the team to be recruited, Kidlat is a rebel kid who constantly questions orders and comes into conflict with others in the team. He is attracted to Diwata, who starts to fall for him in spite of her better judgement. A specialist in street fighting, KIDLAT (lightning) is armed with the "Latigong Kidlat" (Lightning Whip), an electromagnetic pulse blast which can disrupt any electronic or mechanical devices in it's blast radius.

Quick Info: The group's sixth ranger ala X-1 Mask of Maskman. RAHA (tribal leader, synonymous to Datu) was actually the first to be trained and recruited by Guro. However, he left before any of the other members joined.

GURO (played by Robert Sena)
Quick Info: The mentor of the group, GURO (teacher) recruited and trained the entire Pintados team. His rival MAESTRO is the master of Pintados arch-nemesis Commander Katana.

MAYOR (played by ???)
Quick Info: He assists the PINTADOS in chores around the base. Mostly for comic relief, he once was accidentally suited in MAYUMI's battle gear which earned him the monicker MAYORMI.

Kamen Rider BLACK and Black RX

KAMEN RIDER BLACK aka Kotaro Minami (played by Tetsuo Kurata)
Quick Info: Kidnapped and surgically altered by Gorgom to create a new Century King, Kotaro Minami is implanted with the red King Stone and given the name Black Sun. However before the final stages of his surgery is completed, Kotaro is freed by his adopted father who reveals that Gorgom murdered his parents while he was a baby. As Kotaro discovers the effects of the King Stone, he takes the name Kamen Rider BLACK and vows to fight against Gorgom. (see previous post for more information)

KAMEN RIDER BLACK RX aka Kotaro Minami (played by Tetsuo Kurata)
Quick Info: Five years have passed since Kotaro Minami defeated the evil organization Gorgom. An alien race called the Crisis Empire invades Earth, captures Kotaro and jettisons him towards the sun. To make sure he's dead, the Crisis Empire shoots particle beams at him damaging his King Stone splitting it in two. However, the sun's intense radiation alters his King Stone as he miraculously survives re-entry into Earth's atmosphere. Upon his rebirth, Kotaro learns he had evolved into Kamen Rider Black RX. As RX, his main weapon is the Revolcane, a sword that comes out from his Sunriser belt. It has a light saber mode that executes the Revolcrash finishing attack, sending unlimited energy to the enemy.

Kamen Rider BLACK with the various forms of Kamen Rider Black RX: BIORIDER, ROBORIDER and RX.

ROBORIDER, also known as the "Prince of Sadness" and "Prince of Flames", is RX's armored form manifested through sorrow for the love of humanity. In this form, RX's armor becomes bulky and more robotic-like, with black and yellow coloring as his insigna becomes R2. Though lacking agility and speed, RoboRider makes it up in not only enhanced strength and defense but also through his Robo Foam skin which allows him to absorb heat energy to utilize. His signature weapon is the Vortech Shooter pistol that is formed from the right side of his body. It can shoot a powerful solar blast that can destroy an enemy in one blow. As it is powered by sunlight, this gun's range is limitless and never misses the target.

BIORIDER, also known as the "Prince of Anger," is RX's highspeed form manifested through rage. In this form, RX's armor becomes much sleeker, with blue and silver coloring as his insigna changes to R3. Though having a weaker defense, BioRider makes it up with enhanced speed and the ability to transform into gel for escaping traps or attacking enemies while not getting hurt in the process. His weapon is the unbreakable sword Bio Blade, formed from the left side of his body. Like the Revolcane, Bio Blade also has a light saber mode that can slash his enemies in one blow.

Like his predecessor, Black RX also uses 2 Rider Machines. However while Black has two motorbikes, Black RX only has one. His other Rider Machine, a car, earns him the distinction of being the only Rider to have one.

ACROBATTER is the evolved version of Black's old motorcycle Battle Hopper in response to his transformation to RX. It is now capable of speaking coherent Japanese, and often has conversations with Kotaro. Powered by sunlight, Arcobatter can execute the Acrobatic Burn attack. Whenever RX transforms into any of his two other forms, it does the same: Becoming the high speed Roboizer for RoboRider with two Balkan Gun blasters mounted at its rear and the Mach Jabber for BioRider.

RIDRON is a high-speed car created by Kotaro based on the blue prints provided by Prof. Walter who's from one of the colonies the Crisis Empire set up. Able to reach speeds up to 1500 km, Ridron can travel over and under both land and sea. It is highly intelligent, similar to Acrobatter. It has two mandibles that can extend from the front to do break-ins or for ramming enemies.

Kamen Rider Black: GORGOM

The selection process involves finding several worthy candidates who will be transformed into mutants deemed Century Kings, sentenced to fight for the crown with the survivor becoming the new Creation King.

Quick Info: Captured by Gorgom with his stepbrother Kotaro, Nobuhiko Akizuki is implanted with the green "Stone of the Moon". Brainwashed and kept in a state of suspended animation, he finally awakens as Shadow Moon with help from the Stones of Land, Heaven and Sea. His main weapon is the Satan Saber, a red blade specifically created for the use of the Century Kings.

High Priest DAROM (played by Hirokazu Shoji and voiced by Shozo Iizuka)
Quick Info: Leader of the Gorgom High Priests, he has a pale ancient face and able to manipulate others by pointing at them. After losing the power of the "Stone of Heaven" within him to revive Shadow Moon, Darom is reborn as Grand Mutant Darom, a trilobite-like creature. In this form, he can discharge laser beams from his fingers and use his feelers like ropes.

High Priest BARAOM (played by Toshimichi Takahashi)
Quick Info: Has a stone-like green face and can discharge deadly laser beams from his robotic hands. He is usually in charge of the deployment of Gorgom's Mutants. After losing his powers from the "Stone of Sea" within him to revive Shadow Moon, Baraom is reborn as Grand Mutant Baraom, a saber-toothed cat-like creature. In this form, Baraom can wield tusk-shaped weapons along with his natural abilities.

High Priestess BISHIUM (played by Hitomi Yoshii)
Quick Info: Her face is covered with a clear film that is divided between black and white. She has the ability to discharge laser beams from her eyes. After losing her powers from the "Stone of Earth" within her to revive Shadow Moon, Bishium is reborn as Grand Mutant Bishium, a white-haired pterosaur-like creature. In this form, she still has her usual powers and she can spin around to create twisters.

Kensei BILGENIA (played by Jun Yoshida)
Quick Info: Legendary warrior among the Gorgom, Bilgenia was born 30,000 years ago on a day of the solar eclipse like Kotaro Minami and Nobuhiko Akizuki. However, the Creation King did not favor him and therefore did not give him a Kingstone. He was then sealed in a coffin for trying to revolt. The Creation King ordered his release when he reprimanded the High Priests for failing to kill Kamen Rider BLACK.

The BATTLE HOPPER is a living motorcycle created by Gorgom, made specifically for the upcoming Creation Kings Black Sun and Shadow Moon. The Battle Hopper has the ability to heal its own wounds if damaged, and can stand on its own if knocked over. His special move is the Dynamic Smash, a body slam attack that is executed at full speed.

The ROAD SECTOR is a motorcycle created by Yoichi Daimon for Gorgom. A prototype made with the intention of mass production for the use of their mutant soldiers, instead it becomes Kamen Rider Black's second Rider Machine. It can travel at the speed of 500kph and can reach the maximum speed of 960kph with its 1,515 horsepower engine. It has a special function called the Attack Shield, that shields the rider from harm. In this mode, the Road Sector can perform a ramming maneuver called the Sparkling Attack.

Nebula Mask MACHINEMAN

When talking about Tokus, we should never forget to mention Nebula Mask Machineman. Who? You know, that lame dude who wears "plastic cover" for a cape and whose car is so small he has to drive it lying down on his belly. He's so lame that his only ally is a talking baseball named "Buknoy, the fighting ball" (Ballboy in Japanese, which is much lamer IMHO).

MACHINEMAN aka Ken Takase/Nikku (played by Osamu Sakuta)
Quick Info: An alien who comes to Earth in order to study the behaviour of human beings for his doctorate. When he discovers the plot of the evil Tentacle Organization to rid Earth of children, Nikku decides to extend his stay and use his advanced technology to protect the children of Earth.

MAKI HAYAMA (played by Kiyomi Tsukada)
Quick Info: A photographer saved by Nikku. She was taking photographs for a report on a building which had been mysteriously demolished. Nikku as Ken Takase develops a relationship with her throughout the series.

Kamen Rider DEN-O

Imagins are creatures from the future who have come to the year 2007 in hopes of changing the past to alter the future to their liking. To reach this goal, Imagins grant the wishes of weak-hearted humans and then go back in time to that individual's most precious memory. Battling them are the crew of DenLiner, a train capable of travelling through time.

The various forms of Kamen Rider DEN-O: Sword, Rod, Liner, Axe and Gun. The green Kamen Rider is ZERONOS.

KAMEN RIDER DEN-O aka Ryotaro Nogami (played by Takeru Satoh)
Quick Info: A very unlucky young man who on his first appearance manages to lodge himself on his bike in a tall tree. But though jinxed, Ryotaro keeps looking on the brighter side of any situation. He is the one who discovers the Rider Pass, and after persuasion from Hana, decides to use it for the betterment of mankind as the eponymous Kamen Rider Den-O. He is usually referred to as a Singularity Point - someone who can consciously overpower an Imagin who possesses him, as well as exist outside of time.

KAMEN RIDER ZERONOS aka Yuuto Sakurai (played by Yuichi Nakamura)
Quick Info: He first revealed himself to Ryotaro following the defeat of the Wolf Imagin. He is the past version of Ryotaros' sister's fiance but acts nothing like him. Revealing himself as a Kamen Rider, Yuuto advises Ryotaro not to go looking for his future self as it would tamper with time. He says that protecting the flow of time is not the same as saving lives and thus believes Ryotaro to be unfit as Den-O. When he transforms, he uses Zeronos' ALTAIR form and later ZERO form.

HANA (played by Yuriko Shiratori and Tamaki Matsumoto)
Quick Info: The first DenLiner passenger Ryotaro meets, she convinces him to become a Kamen Rider while explaining the uses of the Rider Tickets and the Rider Pass. She originates from a future destroyed by Imagin chaos, still existing because of her status as a Singularity Point. With no timeline to call her home, Hana is filled with malice and spite towards the Imagin, making her capable of subduing the Tarōs when they get out of line. Ironically, Hana grew a soft spot for the Tarōs over the course of the series though she refuses to admit it. Hana usually worries and looks after Ryotaro, treating him like a younger brother.

Kamen Rider DEN-O: SWORD FORM aka Momotaros (Toshihiko Seki)
Quick Info: A the hot-headed Imagin that first possesses Ryotaro without knowing that he is a Singularity Point. He decides that it is more fun to fight other Imagin rather than grant a wish such that he can destroy history to his liking. He is also the subject of most of Hana's abuse, getting easily knocked out by one of her punches. As Den-O, he happily fights other Imagin using his swordsmanship as Sword Form, leads the other Taros in Climax Form, and his power is tapped in the DenKamen Sword's MomoSword mode.

Kamen Rider DEN-O: SWORD FORM aka Urataros (Kōji Yusa)
Quick Info: A smooth-talking Imagin that possesses Ryotaro knowing that he is a Singularity Point because this allows him to have more freedom than granting the wish of anyone else. He tends to flirt with women more than fight, as well as lie to further his goal. He sarcastically calls Momotaros his sempai. As Den-O, he uses his fishing skills as Rod Form, has primary control of the right arm in Climax Form, and his power is tapped in the DenKamen Sword's UraRod mode.

Kamen Rider DEN-O: AXE FORM aka Kintaros (Masaki Terasoma)
Quick Info: The physically strongest of the Imagin linked to Ryotaro, he originally possessed a man named Masaru Honjō, but joins Ryotaro when Den-O is unable to defeat the Rhino Imagin. He is mostly found sleeping on the DenLiner but will possess Ryotaro whenever he hears someone say anything resembling "cry". As Den-O, he lives up to his namesake and fights with an axe as Axe Form, has primary control of the left arm in Climax Form, and his power is tapped in the DenKamen Sword's KinAxe mode.

Kamen Rider DEN-O: GUN FORM aka Ryuutaros (Kenichi Suzumura)
Quick Info: Laid dormant in Ryotaro until he was awakened by Miura's super counseling. He has a child-like disposition and possessed Ryotaro to destroy him so that he could be the conductor of the DenLiner. He also has both a love for break dancing and animals, possessing the ability to control people by snapping his fingers. As Den-O, he uses his questionable marksmanship as Gun Form, has primary control of the legs in Climax Form, and his power is tapped in the DenKamen Sword's RyuGun mode.

Kamen Rider ZERONOS: VEGA FORM aka Deneb (Hochu Otsuka)
Quick Info: The only Imagin contracted to Kamen Rider Zeronos, he acts as a butler to Yuuto Sakurai while on the ZeroLiner and is constantly the subject of his master's playful abuse. He is named after the star Deneb in the constellation Cygnus the Swan. He is able to transform Kamen Rider Zeronos into Vega Form as well as assume the form of the Denebick Buster for Zeronos Zero Form.

I've been addicted to Kamen Rider DECADE lately, so it should come as no surprise that I'm covering the reimaginations of Kamen Rider 1, 2 and V3 via the movies Kamen Rider THE FIRST and Kamen Rider THE NEXT.

Kamen Rider V3 and battle damaged Kamen Rider NIGO and ICHIGO from the movie Kamen Rider THE NEXT.

KAMEN RIDER ICHIGO aka Takeshi Hongo
(played by Hiroshi Fujioka and later by Masaya Kikawada)
Quick Info: Much like the series, Hongo was a biochemistry student who was captured by the evil SHOCKER organization who turned him into super-powered cyborg they codenamed Hopper. Eventually breaking free but unable to save one of the organization's victims, Hongo has an epiphany and decides to use his new found power to stop Shocker's evil plots and protect all that he holds dear from them.

Behind the scenes: Hiroshi Fujioka the actor playing Kamen Rider shattered his leg while filming the 10th episode forcing him to take a longterm hiatus from acting. In order to continue with the series, TOEI hired a new actor to play a new Kamen Rider character, dubbed Kamen Rider 2.

KAMEN RIDER NIGO aka Hayato Ichimonji
(played by Takeshi Sasaki and later by Hassei Takano)
Quick Info: Nigo was re-written for the movie. In the series, Ichimonji was a free-lance photographer kidnapped and transformed by Shocker in order to fight the deserter Takeshio Hongo. However, Hongo freed him before being brainwashed. In the movie, Ichimonji was a created after resurrecting and altering the mind of Katsuhiko Yano, the Shocker victim Hongo failed to save. This time, Nigo went after Ichigo and originally served as his enemy but later turned into his hesitant ally who fights to uphold his own principles.

KAMEN RIDER V3 aka Shiro Kazami
(played by Hiroshi Miyauchi and later by Kazuki Kato)
Quick Info: Like Nigo, V3 was re-written for the movie. In the series, Kazami is made into a Kamen Rider by the two previous Riders who at first refused his pleas but later had no choice after he is fatally wounded saving them. In the movie, Kazami was the latest Kamen Rider powered by the new nano-technology created by Shocker. Like the previous two Riders, V3 starts out as a villain but a dying wish from his sister changes him, allying himself with his predecessors in their battle against Shocker.

The third movie in the trilogy, rumored to be called Kamen Rider ZERO is supposed to feature RIDERMAN who in IMHO is goofiest looking Kamen Rider of all just because of the exposed mouth in that unproportioned helmet of his. But take a look at the new design pictured above. It's pretty impressive. Also, while the first movie is drama and the second horror, it is said the third one would be pure action.

THE PREMISE: The nine previous universes of Kamen Riders are merging into one, something that would destroy all the worlds. To prevent this, Tsukasa Kadoya (Masahiro Inoue) transforms into Kamen Rider DECADE and is told that in order to protect his own world, he must travel to the other Kamen Rider universes and eliminate the anomaly there. Joining him is Natsumi Hikari (Kanna Mori) who foresaw a coming Rider War and is trying to prevent DECADE from becoming the destroyer of all Kamen Riders.

Most of the Kamen Rider lore I know comes from watching the Philippine dub of Kamen Rider BLACK. I don't even think they finished showing the entire series here. So when I heard about BLACK cameo-ing in DECADE, I knew I was eventually have to see this. And man, was I not disappointed. It's like getting a crash course on Kamen Rider lore. And saying that it features a ludicrous amount of Kamen Riders is an understatement.

However, although past main Kamen Riders appear in the series, it should be noted that these incarnations are different from those that appeared on the original shows. But don't fret, two "original" Kamen Riders appeared. The first is Wataru Kurenai (KIVA) who gives Tsukasa his marching orders on the very first episode and then Kazuma Kenzaki (BLADE) who appears in the finale to stop Decade.

There are also countless cameo appearances both canon like that of a young Ryotaro Nogami (DEN-O) and non-canon like that of Kotaro Minami as both the reimagined Kamen Rider BLACK and Kamen Rider Black RX. Yes both of them. How? Watch the video on the left to find out.

Marvel's HEROIC AGE

We all know that after Norman Osborn's Dark Reign, Marvel would enter a new HEROIC AGE. And based from the teasers released by Marvel the big 3 - Captain America, Iron Man and Thor - would reunite to reform the AVENGERS. The question is, which Captain America is it? And if this is the new Avenger's line up, where's Luke Cage?

Well Marvel just released some new teasers regarding the Avenger's line-up. Officially, the aside from the big three the line up includes: Clint Barton as Hawkeye and the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman. Also it seems that the Captain America is indeed Bucky Barnes as the new teasers depict him carrying a gun.

So here's my theory: Bucky Barnes would be wielding Captain America's shield. But since Steve Rogers can't be without one, he'd get a new SHIELD. One that stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate. With Osborn out of the way and with the images of both Tony Stark and Nick Fury tainted, only Steve Rogers can fill that position.

But where's Luke Cage? Well, there's a new teaser making the rounds. One that depicts Luke Cage with three characters from the left side of the original teaser - Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Gorilla Man. The teaser also includes Hank Pym and Bobbi Morse. So if were going to assume that the right side of the teaser is the main AVENGERS team, then is this a second team? I'm half-expecting The Beast to re-join the Avengers since the latest X-Men storyline have him taking a leave of absence from the team.

But the biggest question of all still remains unanswered: Is this brighter and friendlier HEROIC AGE a mandate from Marvel's new parent company Disney?

Must See: Planet HULK

I just finished watching the animated feature adaptation of PLANET HULK. This storyline that ran during Greg Pak's turn as writer of the green behemoth is one of my favorites.

THE PREMISE: When Iron Man and his Illuminati decided that they had enough of the incidents they blamed on the HULK, they opted to put him into a space shuttle headed to an uninhabited planet. However, something goes wrong and the HULK crash lands on planet SAKAAR where he ends up being sold as a gladiator on the King's arena.

Why I like it: Frankly, it's because the GREEN SCAR is my favorite HULK incarnation of all. Forget about the stupid green Hulk who talks like a caveman. Forget about the street snart "Joe Fixit" Gray Hulk. Forget about the genius Professor Hulk. The GREEN SCAR is the perfect HULK - green, tactical and he talks in sentences. Plus they equipped him with a sword. A gamma-powered Conan the Barbarian, if you will. Go ahead and see for yourself. Watch the direct-to-DVD adaptation or better yet, read Incredible HULK # 91 onwards. And don't forget to also check out WORLD WAR HULK.

Mini-rant: And then they sent him back to Earth... into the hands of JEPH LOEB. God, I hate Jeph Loeb. Not only did he make the HULk dumb again, he also introduced the monstrosity that is the Red HULK. I just hope that the aftermath of the FALL OF HULKS (co-written by Greg Pak) gives rise to the return of the Green Scar.

And from the high mountains of the realm known as internet came a traveler. He was a normal man, but one of great size and mainly of gerth. This man was a prophet of Nerd Law, and he went by the name of Bricken. In his hands he carried great tools. In his left hand, a device known as a laptop, which he claimed he had direct contact with all of his people, even if his grammar wasn't exactly correct.

Walking through a nearby village, he stumbled upon several children gather around a viewing screen that was called, television. Bricken stopped to watch what the children were viewing. On the screen a show, was a wondrous show that appealed to all the aspects and laws contained in the book of Nerd Law. It had vibrant characters and interesting stories. However, a Fox was sitting in wait a few paces behind the television.

Bricken intrigued, turned to a boy near the front, 'Boy, how long has this show been running?' The boy smiled and said, 'Why, Master Bricken! This show is first run! Would you enjoy it with us?' Bricken was overjoyed! 'Yes! I shall!' Sitting, Bricken watched the show with the children and found himself entranced with the show.

Three episodes in, a Fox slipped into the crowd and began to count those in the audience. Bricken was puzzled, but ignored the Fox. When Fox was done, it slipped behind the television and pulled the plug. The children were horrified and Bricken howled at the Fox, 'Fox! Why have thee killed our show?'

The Fox, cackled with laughter, 'This show was creative and slowly gaining an audience. However, not quickly enough. Therefore, I shall replace it with this!' Lights flickered on the television and the creative, interesting, well thought out story that appealed to every aspect of Nerd Law was gone. In its place was a show that only a heathen would like.

The children ran away to their homes, hiding their televisions from the dreaded Fox. Bricken stayed behind and spoke to the Fox, 'That was a cruel, cruel thing to do Fox. Was not your audience large enough.'

The Fox smiled, 'It was, it was. However, I have decided to go another direction. Another dancing program where people are judged. What are you going to do about it Bricken?'

Picking up his mighty laptop he began to write to his people. Posting after posting, he warned his people of the cruelty of the Fox. The Fox's powers grew weaker, but they didn't go away entirely. 'Bricken, you have weakened me, but I can never truly go away.'

Bricken nodded, 'This is true, for there is even a place for you in this book of Nerd Law, and I, only lowly prophet Bricken, can do nothing to defeat you entirely. Even with the threat of skull fucking. It would take the entirety of the following of the Book of Nerd Law. However, I can do this!'

From this story, the Nerd Law was written, "Thou shall never fully trust a program presented by Fox, no matter how closely it follows the rules within the book of Nerd Law, for it could go away without warning. Even with the threat of a skull fucking."

THE PREMISE: Two vampire brothers - one good, one evil. Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) is a young girl from a town called Mystic Falls. One day she meets Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a mysterious young man who seems to be new in town. What she doesn't know is that Stefan had lived in Mystic Falls years before and that he is a vampire. What they both don't know is that Stefan's more nefarious brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is also back in town.

The vampires are back at theCW, the former theWB (home of BtVS and ANGEL) commissioned this series based from Dawson's Creek boss Kevin Williamson and he delivered. Aside from it's mixture of teen angst and the supernaural, what's great about this series is that its mythology shows great potential. Ofcourse, the similarity to Twilight can't be avoided. I'm not a Twilight fan, never been. But comparing this series to what I saw on the Twilight movie, I can honestly say that this series is way better. And I would also like to point out that the books this series was adapted from was published before Twilight. So if you need a vampire fix, I highly recommend The Vampire Diaries.

It has been almost two months sice my last blog post. I've been busy with work. No. Wait. Let's blame Facebook instead. I am now just catching up with my shows, so my first post of the year is about one. Scrubs has been out there since 2001 but it's only been this week that I saw the pilot.

THE PREMISE: JD (Zach Braff) starts his first day as a medical intern at Sacred Heart with his long time friend Turk (Donald Faison). There he befriends Elliot (Sarah Chalke), another intern and Carla (Judy Reyes), one of the staff nurses. He also meets 2 of Sacred Heart's most colorful personalities - Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), a quick witted and sarcastic attending and Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins), the hospital's cold-hearted Chief of Medicine. Oh and JD also starts what would be a long-running adversarial relationship with the hospital's Janitor (Neil Flynn).

I've already finished watching Season One of this 30 minute dramedy and it's awesome. It's not like other medical shows. Actually, it's not a medical show. The hospital is just the setting. The stories are more about the relationships between the characters than them diagnosing the case of the week. Not only does the show infuse humor into the plots, they also use slapstick via fantasy sequences. Okay, I'm gonna start Season 2 now.

KALAYAAN # 7 and 8

You know why I love reading KALAYAAN by Gio Paredes? It's because Gio knows how to tell a good story. Here in issue 7, Kalayaan is split into two. An invading sorcerer from a dark realm removes all the "bad" in Kalayaan to create ALIPIN, a sort of evil Kalayaan. I said "sort" because reading the book I sort of related to the social commentary made by Gio. Okay, so maybe not all of us dream of having superpowers but I know most would dream of having the power to punish the wicked. And I mean PUNISH in the most extreme sense. Or is it just me? Anyways, that's what Alipin did... punish the wicked.

And of course that didn't sit well with Kalayaan or gueststars Pag-asa and Servant of the Bayan Knights Powerhouse Division. Yep, issue 8 is a drag-out no holds barred fight between the team of Pag-asa/Servant and Alipin. That is, until Kalayaan arrived and took Alipin on a Philippine Fight Tour. And it's not only physical, the two also debated their ideology on crimefighting. The fight also took on a more emotional turn when Alipin used his knowledge of Kalayaan's secrets to hit low blows of his own. If you're a fan of Kalayaan, you can't miss this one.

The SKYWORD Review

Every Legend Hides A Lie. That's the tagline for Mervin Ignacio and Ian Sta. Maria's SKYWORLD. A book that aims to twist legend and history to reveal an unknown truth.

Let's start with Book 1. APOCRYPHA feels like prologue, an introduction to the SKYWORLD. Here we are introduced to a tikbalang named Makabo and his quest to avenge his father by slaying the asuang named Rianka. We are also introduced to the SkyLord named Kaptan, a god who by the end of the book has fallen. Though we get to see the bloody battle, we don't exactly see its outcome and how this SkyLord fell and survived.

The second book entitled TESTAMENT starts with a history lesson pertaining to the battle of Mactan. They say that Antonio Pigafetta wrote two versions of history, the one we know now and the one that tells the truth. This second installment reads better. Not only does most of the story take place in the present with Rianka summoning a great beast, there is also a huge battle sequence that not only involves Makabo but also guest star Alexandra Trese and the Kambal.

So if you're like me and enjoy reading new takes on existing mythology and history, you have to get this one. My only reservation (small one, really) about this book is the art. Although, it's one of the better drawn comic books out there, the pages look too plain for my taste. And after seeing what Ian Sta. Maria can do on UNDERPASS, I feel that this book would be much better if it was in full color.

Reviewing UNDERPASS

Next on this KOMIKON review list is Summit Media's UNDERPASS. This graphic anthology actually compiles four horror stories.

The first one called SIM is written and drawn by renowned komikero Gerry Alanguilan. It's about a man who finds a lost SIMcard and then gets a mysterious call from its previous owner. I thought I knew how this one ends. I was wrong.

The second tale called JUDAS KISS is drawn by Oliver Pulumbarit from a story by David Hontiveros. It's a twisted tale that involves sex, betrayal and murder. You might want to keep this one away from the young kids.

The third story is written by David Hontiveros and drawn by Ian Sta. Maria. It's called KATUMBAS and showcases Kadasig, an immortal warrior whose job is to send evil spirits to the underworld(?) like some sort of reaper. This tale is my favorite artwise. Ian Sta. Maria's action sequences and photo-manipulated backgrounds form one hell of a combination. Eye Candy.

The last tale is my favorite of the four. It's called THE CLINIC and it's from the powerhouse duo of Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo. Yep, the guys who gave us TRESE. The story is about an up-and-coming actress who just found out that she's pregnant. And since this is Budjette and Kajo were talking about, of course there's going to be a twist. And a shoutout to one of TRESE's cases!

TRESE: Mass Murders

Remember when I reviewed issues 1 thru 7 of Budjette Tan and KaJo Baldisimo's TRESE and said that I wanted to see the big reveals real soon? Well, here it is! TRESE: Mass Murders does not disappoint!

I can't help but compare this installment to Naruto's "Kakashi Gaiden" or Bleach's "Turn Back The Pendulum." It's that good. And based from the comparison, I might as well confirm that most of the book is a flashback. Not only do we learn more about Alexandra Trese's origins, we also get a glimpse of her family and heritage. To avoid spoiling those really juicy parts, I'll only reveal that we finally see Trese's dad in action and he employs not 2 but a pack of bodyguards.

TRESE: Mass Murders differs from the first two books in that the stories contained here are not episodic but rather more serialized. The book actually tells a complete story arc that builds on the mythology of the universe. Budjette and Kajo have really outdone themselves. From story to character designs... this book kicks ass. And yes, this is the end of my review. NO MORE SPOILERS FOR YOU. Go get a copy now.

Bayan Knights # 3

I was able to attend KOMIKON today at the SM Megatrade Hall and was able to get a bunch of local TPBs (also a tankobon of Witchblade), the long overdue Bayan Knights T-Shirt and of course the much awaited third installment of Sacred Mountain's Bayan Knights

This issue presents two concurrent storylines. The first concludes last issue's cliffhanger with Liberty Girl waking up at "The Facility" and attacking Sargento Sagrado and the Bayan Knights. The second deals with Bayan Knights' first encounter with the Bangis team formed by the mysterious Dilim. The issue also gives hints on some upcoming storylines involving BK's Powerhouse Division and the CORE's Digmaang Salinlahi crossover (will report on those when released).

Artwise. We know what to expect from Gilbert Monsanto - awesome panel breakdowns and some wonderful pin up style shots of the Bayan Knights and Bangis. ONDOY Floods Manila!

I'm supposed to be blogging about the latest episode of Joss Whedon's DOLLHOUSE. Unfortunately, I'm stuck here and cannot download said episode because of limited bandwidth. And like me, most of Metro Manila (and nearby provinces) are either stuck, stranded or on their way to evacuation centers because of ONDOY. Just take a look at the picture below.

PAG-ASA declared Typhoon Signal Number 1 over Metro Manila. Signal Number 1? Then how come it's flooding? Well, it's because the typhoon signal is based on how strong the winds are and not on how much rainfall there actually is. They say that the overnight rain we experienced are equivalent to 1 month of rainfall. Thus, the flooding.

But you know what's really bugging me? I actually got a text message from my mom saying that our house was also flooded. And that they didn't have enough time to keep my computer from being washed away.

I was watching the 61st Emmy Awards the other day and was surprised that Dr. Horrible made an appearance. I didn't think it had that much appeal outside of the Whedon fanbase. But based on the crowd reaction at the ceremony, it will now. It was probably riding on NPH's new found popularity but let's not forget that it also won the Emmy for Outstanding Special Class, Short Format, Live Action Entertainment Programs. Or as Joss Whedon puts it: "the award for the most incomprehensible category." And did I mention that the rest of the main cast also makes an appearance.

Joss Whedon's DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG wins an Emmy for short-format live-action entertainment programs. Well it's about damn time! Cult-fave Joss Whedon and his team of talented collaborators have been snubbed for too long. BtVS, ANGEL and Firefly were great hours of television and it's a shame that they didn't deserve the mainstream recognition they deserved. Anyways, congrats to the HORRIBLE team.

And if you're wondering why the photo above is only 400 pixels wide, it's because I've reached my storage limit on Photobucket. Apparently, Photobucket sliced the storage space allotted for free users in half. Why? Why do you think? To force people to get the a PRO account. Pretty crafty, huh? I'm sure you're pretty bummed about this too, so here's a little something to get you through the day.

Eli Stone: Vision Of The Future

Eli Stone is one of the most heart-warming and inspiring TV show that I have ever seen. And like ALL great TV shows... it has been prematurely canceled. This time by the people at ABC. The following information from executive producer and creator Marc Guggenheim is reposted from EOnline's Watch With Kristin. Here, he reveals that there are actually 4 scripts that were not filmed. He also reveals the "real" endgame of the series.

Eli and Maggie: The idea was going to be that Eli starts dating Maggie, and then just as things are going really great, there's a knock on the door. He opens the door to his apartment and there's Grace, who is back in town.

Eli Ends Up With Grace: We didn't know whether or not he would end up with Grace. Obviously had we gone to series, it would've been difficult for him to end up with Grace because we didn't have Katie Holmes on a weekly basis. But we thought it would be nice to bring her back for an episode, and she was game. We wanted to end the season with her.

Maggie and... Nate?!: Maggie and Eli don't end up together. Maggie and Nate end up together. In episode 11 of season one, when you saw Eli 40 years in the future in Times Square, the baby that Maggie is holding is her baby, but it's with Nate. We were going to revisit that flash-forward and return to Times Square. You would see that Nate arrived late, and as Eli took the stage, he was going to push his way through the throng of people to meet up with Maggie.

Dr. Chen and Nate: They were going to go into practice together. We had Nate lose his job at the hospital and eventually Nate and Chen were going to open up an Eastern and Western medicine practice. It was going to be like The Odd Couple.

Matt and Taylor: They were going to get married. Taylor would eventually have their baby. Matt [Sam Jaeger] was going to be the surprisingly good father. Taylor would find it difficult to balance work and motherhood, but Matt would show a surprising ability for being a dad.

Jordan, Taylor's Mama and the Firm: Jordan was going to reconnect with Taylor's mother. We were hoping to get Goldie Hawn. That was the plan and hope. Also, Wethersby Stone was going to continue to grow and prosper. Maggie would eventually come back to the firm.

Happy Eli Ending?: Eli gets a very happy ending. Basically the overall plan for the show was that with each season, Eli's profile would get bigger and bigger, until by the end of the series, he would be talking to crowds of thousands of people. His profile would grow until he actually found it difficult to practice law because he had so much notoriety. Then the show was going to shift from Eli being a lawyer to being more of an active prophet. One of the things we always said on the show was Abraham Lincoln was a prophet, Martin Luther King Jr. was a prophet, Gandhi was a prophet. All three people met premature ends. As Eli's profile grew, the danger grew to him as well.

Must See: MARVEL/DC

THE PREMISE: Action figure Superman, Batman and Spider-Man meets in a bar. And in comedic fashion, talk about the successes and failures of their respective movie franchises. Action figure Wolverine is also there, he blames the Man OF Steel for taking away the director of the X-Men movies. But nothing is what it seems. Somewhere, the supervillains of both universes are plotting against them. Can our heroes finally work together and save the day?

I was just checking out the "I'm a Marvel... I'm a DC" parody by ItsJustSomeRandomGuy when I accidentally discovered this webseries in his YouTube channel. What started out as Marvel and DC action figures talking crap about each other ended up being one of the best Marvel/DC team-up story I have ever seen. And even though this story is both unofficial and out of continuity, the sheer pleasure you'll get from the heroes "comic awareness" (ala Deadpool) is worth the time and effort. And while this is performed using Marvel and DC action figures, the voice acting is superb. ItsJustSomeRandomGuy and JustSomeRandomGal does a great job of providing each character with their own unique voice. What amazes me most though, is that Harley and Joker sounds exactly like their AnimatedDCU voices. Now that's impressive. Go check it out!

REVIEW: Astiging BOY IPIS # 1

Just finished reading BOY IPIS #1. Isa lang masasabi ko - ASTIG! Released through Bayan Knights publisher Sacred Mountain, the issue is beautifully drawn by Sarge himself, Mr. Gilbert Monsanto. And he ain't kidding when he said that he enjoyed working on this book. It shows in the panels, the facial exressions and the attention to detail. It was also nice to see him draw Boy Ipis out of costume and deal with the other side of super-heroing.

But the real gem of the issue is the story brought to us by Boy Ipis creator Paul Michael Ignacio which has a great balance of both plot and character development. Not only does this episode give us Boy Ipis's first(?) solo adventure, it also as previously mentioned, gives us a glimpse of his life and struggles out of costume. Although I was a bit surprised with most of the characters delivering their lines in heavy tag-lish, I was quite impressed -- specially when the female lead self-refenced it in one of her thought balloons. I also liked the fact that Mike made it a point to give nods to the other superheroes in the BK universe such as Kalayaan and Unstoppable. It gives the shared universe more credibility.

Let me see, I may be forgetting something. Oh, there are a lot of jokes -- funny, silly and some naughty -- splattered across the 32 page story. There's also a sort of back-up feature/epilogue featuring Amy Vidal's Phantom Cat illustrated by Redg Vicente. The book promises to integrate her into the main storyline in issue 2 (can't wait!) and teases an appearance of a familiar silhouette. What else? Ah. I forgot to mention the villains in the story whose names I find really amusing. They are introduced and dispatched a bit quickly for my taste but I hope that this is not the last time we get to see them -- especially Android the Giant. That guy is just too cute and creepy at the same time.

A really great read. Thinking about waiting for the next installment is just too painful. Make this a monthly book already! And with sponsors biting that Boy Ipis powered advert at the back, it could happen.

The FILIPINO HEROES LEAGUE

The Filipino Heroes League by Paolo Fabregas is about the struggles of group of Filipino superheroes working with the Philippine government. Underfunded and undermanned, the heroes Invisiboy and Kidlat Kid together with veteran hero Flashlight lives in the old and almost abandoned building once occupied by the previous generation of FHL. They can't even afford to fix their jeep, forcing them to ride a ~~tricycle~~ pedicab to get to the scene of battle. That is, if they are even called upon by the local cops. They are also kept in the dark, their heroism doesn't even make it to the evening news. But that's OK, because as Flashlight puts it, they "do it for the chicks."

The first thing I noticed while flipping through the book's pages is the art by Paolo Fabregas. And even though the book is rendered in black and white, you can clearly see the detailed job put into every panel. And as much as I enjoy the action sequences, my attention seems to also focus on the awesome rendering of the backgrounds/settings and vehicles. The story is still ongoing so I won't go into details. It has a conspiracy feel to it. And I have a good feeling that this will gravitate towards a WATCHMEN level of intrigue. And that can only be a good thing. Hopefully, this series will also be released in TPB and I think it would do better in that format. I know I'm not the only one who hates the wait between issues.

Reviewing UNOS MUNDOS

Markus was right! You definitely have to add Wan Mananita's UNOS MUNDOS into your KomiKon pull list -- especially if you like shounen stories. Mananita introduces us to a world where super-powered teenagers exists. One (that is his name) is an unwitting participant in his brother's mission to "make the world a better place." And as such, is tasked to fight other super-powered individuals as an assassin for his brother's ORPAN organizarion. However, he is not the only focus of the book. There are also other interesting characters such as the pyrokinetic Norman and another mysterious assassin hunting Orpan agents. We still haven't seen the big picture and it is yet unknown who the real hero of this story is. But I bet it's going to be a good ride. Now for the art: Mananita fully utilizes the manga-influenced art style used in this book. Best Scene: Early in issue 1, Norman powers up only to discover that his pyrokinesis doesn't work under bad weather. That really made me chuckle and that is because of the manga inspired rendering of his facial expression. Another great scene is in issue 2 where Orpan Hunter makes quick work of his opponents, spilling their blood in silence. I will no longer be spoiling any more details so go grab a copy now!

Watching Dollhouse: EPITAPH ONE

Finally, I was able to see the lost Dollhouse episode Epitaph One. What happened? Well FOX didn't want to buy the rights to air this episode but this is still considered cannon in the Dollhouse universe. Just to note, if you didn't know that this episode is set in 2019 you would actually be weirded out... at least at the start before the actual timeline is flashed onscreen.

The episode is about a group of people trying to find sanctuary from technology. Why? Because in this world, the tech to remotely imprint people have gotten out and people started stealing other people's bodies. As this is set in the future, the main cast appears only on flashbacks... which have several WTF moments. One of which includes Ballard as Echo's new handler. Another involves fan-shipping.

Random thoughts: (1) This episode was shot using the crew of 24. Thus, the first thing I noticed while watching it was that the camera work was a bit different. A little shaky. (2) No title credits. I miss the credits. (3) Was the little girl the same kid from Harper's Island? (4) Don't get your brain scanned by a Rossum scanner. They send copies of the 3D model to the Dollhouse. But don't worry if you did, the complete personality swipe takes several sessions and is painful. (4) It was Topher who revolutionized the imprinting process. He also caused the apocalypse. (5) "You don't want to end up like November..." "Which one?" I humbly nominate Summer Glau (5) I'm sad for Whiskey/Saunders, she's still waiting for him to come back. Who's HIM? Anong tinititigan mo diyan Crissy? A candid shot of Angelica Panganiban on the set of NNNN. Yep, BANANA SPLIT is one of the few local programs I watch on TV. I love how dead-on Angelica and Jayson portrays Kris and Boy in the NNNN portion of the show. I can't help but laugh out loud. I'm not really surprised with Angelica's performance since I once saw her play Maricel Soriano on one of their gags, but Jayson... that I didn't expect.

The Death Of UCHIHA ITACHI

Remember when Itachi kept poking Sasuke's forehead whenever his kid brother asked to play with him. I guess, somethings never change.

Sasuke's mission is finally over. ITACHI is dead. And with his death, the truth is finally revealed: that Itachi was good all along, at least according to his accomplice Uchiha Madara. But should we really believe it? Madara has been portrayed as the main villain -- the one behind Akatsuki and the man who sent the nine-tailed demon fox to attack Konoha. The Kyuubi himself acknowledged Madara to possess a chakra more evil than its own. But his story actually makes a lot of sense. Itachi choosing to silence his own rebelling clan to keep the peace is believable. More so now that Danzo and "Root" are shown to be as conniving as Orochimaru. Only time will tell.

Captain America REBORN #1

SPOILERS: For 2 years, we thought that Steve Rogers was dead -- assassinated by his associate Agent 13. We were wrong. As it turns out, the gun that Sharon Carter used to shoot Captain America at point blank range wasn't a gun at all. It was a weapon acquired from Dr. Doom, a weapon that made Captain America unstuck in time. So while his body is buried somewhere in the Arctic... his mind has been jumping from one point in time to another, reliving his days in World War II and then the death of his mother.

I'm a huge fan of Ed Brubaker's work on Captain America. In fact, I've been reading since issue 1. And he has probably been planning this arc since the beginning of his run. However, the main problem I see with this backdoor - using some sort of time travel - to bring Cap back is its timing. Final Crisis is still fresh on everyone's mind. Batman being trapped in the past is still fresh on everyone's mind. Also, the way they called Sharon Carter "The Constant" and the way Cap jumps through time via flashes of light is reminiscent of Desmond and last season's Lost. I'll reserve final judgment until the entire mini is done but for now I'm not impressed.

Uchuu Keiji SHAIDER

"Time space warp... ngayun din!" Forget about those goddamn VR Troopers and ZAIDOs, the original Space Sheriff SHAIDER is still the best!

In college, Dai Sawamura deciphered the figures on the Nazca Plain in Peru. Impressed by this feat, the Galactic Union Police recruited the archaeologist and trained him to be Earth's third Space Sheriff, after which he was given the code name SHAIDER in memory of an ancient warrior who defeated the villain Emperor Kubilai and brought down the Fuuma Empire 12,000 years ago. The empire, upon learning about the appointment of Dai as the new Shaider, plots to annihilate him in order to once again conquer Earth.

SHAIDER aka Dai Sawamura
(played by Hiroshi Tsuburaya)
Quick Info: An Earth-born Space Sheriff, he is an archaeologist who deciphered the figures on the Nazca Plain. He trained with Annie, Kitz and Ullu. His ablitiles as SHAIDER includes "Blue Flash Spark" which transforms him into a blue ball of light. When not wearing the Shaider gear, Dai usually patrols the streets using a blue 1980's Suzuki SJ with Jimny livery.

ANNIE (played by future pornstar Naomi Morinaga)
Quick Info: Dai's classmate whose homeworld of Mount was annihilated by Fuuma. She requested to be assigned to Earth with Dai, so as to avenge the destruction of her home planet. She usually drives a yellow Mazda RX-7 FB to patrol the streets or arrive at the scene of a battle.

SHAIDER is the third and last of the Space Sheriff trilogy and as such, Space Sheriffs GAVAN and SHARIVAN makes an appearance.

Weapons and Equipment: Shaider's side weapon is called the Video Beam Gun. It is called as such because it has a video screen that detects Strange monsters that turn invisible. He also hides a Laser Blade or Shaider Cutter which is drawn like a metal tape measure from his waist. It sometimes assume a ribbon-like flexibility to hold Strange monsters in battle. Shaider also has a variety of vehicles such as the Sky Striker and Battle Tank. The former is used to attack and destroy Fuuma jet fighters while the latter is a giant drill tank. He also uses a motorcycle called the Blue Hawk in order to follow monsters into the "Strange Realm". And whenever he encounters a giant Fuuma gunship in the Strange Realm, Shaider summons Vavilos, his giant spaceship headquarters, commanding it to transform either into a giant gun called the Big Magnum or a giant robot whose chest emits a giant laser beam called Vavilos Fire.

You know sometimes, I hate watching live TV. Not only are the commercials longer than the show itself but sometimes I also see those goddamn politacal ads. You know what I'm talking about.... padyak-padyak-padyak, di bale nang magdildil ng asin, ganito kami sa Makati and the one where some jackass was spelling his name.

But then again if I didn't watch live TV, I wouldn't be able to catch some of the most ingenious commercials to date. This one's kinda old now. It's the Bulilit-Bulilit ad from Camella. I like it, it's kinda cute. Mind you, I've seen the actual house & it's a small space.

I just remembered something that I forgot to rant about in the first paragraph. It's not live TV but related since it's another gorram advertisement for political purposes. It's not live TV because I've only seen it on Eastwood cinemas. It's the MMDA "Kani-kanina lang ay kausap ko ang mga batang 'yan... Ano daw ang ibig sabihin ng Metro Gwapo" Ang ending: "Sabi pa nila... Bakit Metro Manila lang? Dapat buong Pilipinas gwapo" This is followed by some finger waving "Tama nga naman" and really, really bad acting. OK, back to topic.

Now this one is new. Saw this a few days ago while I was watching TV. It's quite amusing. Charming in its own way. Papakabit na nga ako ng BayanDSL, baka bumilis bilis ang Internet connection ko. Watch it while I'm searching and uploading part 2.

Power Rangers: FOREVER RED

While we're on the subject of SuperSentais, let's talk about SABAN's Power Ranger franchise. I watched the series pretty religiously when it was airing Fridays on ABS-CBN. Although SABAN's attempts at other Tokus suck (such as Dex and the lameness that was Masked Rider), we have to admit that SABAN did something worthwhile with the Power Rangers. I don't know anything about its current incarnation but from the ancient Power Rangers episodes that I've seen, I can that it was entertaining. Wouldn't you? It was the first time we've seen a recurring sixth ranger. And he was evil.

But that wasn't really the point of my post. The point was to tell you about a special 10th anniversary episode called "Forever Red" from Power Rangers: Wild Force where they re-unite the 9 previous Red Rangers with the Wild Force Red Ranger (see picture above). This is old news for those of you who have been following the series. But if you're like me who dropped off after the "originals" were gone, it was a nice treat to see Jason and Tommy back in action. Watch it and reminisce about the good-ol-days. I bet it's still posted somewhere on YouTube.

If you're a 90s kid like me, you would've probably seen MASKMAN on IBC13. You probably remember the famous scene where Takeru (Red Mask) was shouting "Rio..." while Princess Ial (Mio) is being sucked into the ground. She in turn calls for him, "Michael Joe..." Let's take a look back, shall we.

The Royal Underground Empire Tube, a malignant force located underground desire to turn the world into a cold and shady planet, suitable for their living conditions. Five young people who specialized in a style of martial arts are taught in the ways of the mystical aura power energy by a scientist and sage who excels in mental reinforcements and is a master of every martial art to fight as the Maskman (description from Super Sentai Time Capsule)

Takeru aka RED MASK (played by Ryousuke Kaizu)
Quick Info: The leader of the group. He is a specialist in Karate and a Formula One driver. He was spotted by Sugata a year prior to the beginning of the series while rescuing a woman and her child. When he was challenged by Sugata, he did not back down and Sugata offered him a spot on the Maskman team, anticipating the invasion of Tube. His love for Mio and desire to find her is his motivation. He mastered the technique known as "God Hand." His meditation gesture is Zai (open hands with index finger and thumb together), which means the control over nature forces.

Kenta aka BLACK MASK (played by Kouichi Kusakari)
Quick Info: The second in command of the team. He specializes in Kung fu. He is shy around women but can be a playboy at times. He is lighthearted but strong and dependable. He worked as a mechanic for the Sugata Racing Team and once worked for the Sun Racing Team. His meditation gesture is Jin (all fingers enlaced in a fist), which means the guessing of others' thoughts and intentions.

Akira aka BLUE MASK (played by Issei Hirota)
Quick Info: He is the youngest Maskman. He is a Chinese boxer and a broadsword expert. His father died while he was younger and he was the only child. He left his mother back home alone to move to Tokyo in order to perfect his martial arts ability. Always cheerful, he loves apples and the idol Youko Minamino. His meditation gesture is Retsu (two fists together with index finger from right hand sticking out), which means dominion over time and space.

Haruka aka YELLOW MASK (played by Yuki Nagata)
Quick Info: She was raised in a family of ninjas. Forced by her father to abandon all things "girly" to focus on her ninja training, she appears tomboyish and is a fierce fighter. She is highly intelligent. She loves dancing and tutors a young girl who is unable to afford dance lessons. Her meditation gesture is Tou (all fingers together in a fist except ring and pinkie), which means the harmony towards the Universe.

Momoko aka PINK MASK (played by Kanako Maeda)
Quick Info: She is an expert in Tai chi chuan. A young woman with a pure heart, she often teaches youths Tai Chi. Strong and dedicated, she once, by chance, met Ial and Igam's mother, who gave her the saintly flower known as Carollove. Her meditation gesture is Sha (all fingers together in a fist except index fingers), which means the self-healing.

Ryoh Asuka aka X1 MASK
(played by Yutaka Hirose)
Quick Info: He was the prototype Maskman, also having trained with Commander Sugata. However, when his lover was killed by the Underground Empire Tube, he gave up everything, losing confidence in his abilities due to the failure of saving his girlfriend. He returned to help the other Maskman, losing his powers in the process. After his final fight, he decided to travel and teach martial arts. He transformed with the phrase "Change Power"

Commander Sanjuurou Sugata
Quick Info: A scientist and martial artist who founded the team. A wise man who excels in mental reinforcements and every martial art. Sugata had discovered the existence of the Underground Empire Tube, which at the beginning, was pacifist. With the ascent of Zeba to the throne, Tube started to desire the conquest of the world. He is owner of Sugata Racing, a motoring team where Takeru is a driver and Kenta once worked as an engineer.

THE PREMISE: The year is 2018. Mankind is at the brink of extinction as they are hunted down by Skynet and its Terminators. John Connor (Christian Bale) is the leader of a group of resistance fighters. He has known about this day since he was just a child and Skynet sent machines back in time to kill him. But the survival of this future rests on the hands of someone else... the recently revived Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington).

I'm a fan of the franchise. I've seen all three movies and have been following The Sarah Connor Chronicles on television. And today (late as it may) I finally saw the much anticipated new movie Terminator Salvation. It was entertaining. Full of the action one would expect from director McG. But it didn't feel like a Terminator movie to me. Frankly, parts of it felt more like The Matrix sequels than any Terminator movie. Of course, that is due to the fact that the movie is actually set sometime after Judgment Day -- after the machines took over and killed most of mankind.

Anyways, did you know that originally, John Connor was supposed to have had a smaller role in the film and that Christian Bale was supposed to play the part of Marcus. Also and here's the more interesting bit, in the original script the ending would have had John Connor fatally wounded by the T-800. He would have died and in order to keep his legend alive, the resistance leaders (I'm assuming Kate) would have grafted his skin onto Marcus' endoskeleton. How would you feel about that? That would've been one hell of a mindf*ck specially for the fans. Don't believe me, check it out on AICN.

This one's long overdue. I've been following this series since 2004 and for some unknown reason, I'm blogging about it just now. Five years later.

THE PREMISE: Naruto is a young boy in the hidden village of Konoha. He is a good for nothing student in the ninja academy and a trouble-maker who is detested by the other villagers. Unknown to him, the reason the villagers hate him is because within him lives a demon. The nine-tailed demon fox that attacked their village long ago and was defeated by the 4th Hokage was sealed inside him. But all that is about to change. And Naruto may just become the greatest ninja Konoha has ever seen.

Watching Naruto travel the path to greatness is one great ride. I mean having your main guy laughed at and ridiculed by his comrades and then later have them acknowledge their mistake in an emotion-filled monologue is always a sure win! It's your underdog story taken to the next level. And counting the growing number of villagers that Naruto inspires is inspirational in itself. If you've never seen Naruto, you're missing something that is really great. Give it a try. If you don't feel for the guy after watching the emotion-filled first episode then you're just a mean cold-hearted bastard.

I'm watching season two of the new Gundam series and I realize that I've never done an entry about any Gundam show. The Gundam series is a complicated bunch. Most of what I've seen is about war with the heroes and villains shifting alliances or roles. Not something an 8 year old can follow.

THE PREMISE: Cosmic Era. When the neutral colony of Helipolis is suddenly attacked by ZAFT forces, it is revealed that it has been housing the Earth Alliance's latest mobile weapons - The GUNDAM. After saving the life of an Earth Alliance officer and piloting one of the Gundams to save his friends, a civilian named Kira Yamato is dragged into the war between the "Naturals" and the genetically enhanced "Coordinators".

Gundam SEED is my favorite Gundam series of all time. It has IMHO the best Gundam story ever. It is not just about war but also focuses on the people fighting in them. The series has a ton of wonderful characters moments. The Earth Alliance vessel Archangel only has a single Gundam unit while the ZAFT forces after them has the remaining four. This is how legends are made! I haven't even mentioned Lacus and Kira's rivalry with his one time best friend Athrun Zala of ZAFT. There's also Mu and Andrew Waltfeld, and the now almost mythical ZGMF-X10A Freedom. The list goes on. Go watch it. NOW.

Yep, Paul Michael Ignacio's Astiging Boy Ipis is getting the solo treatment with the launch of his very own title! The release coincides with the first ever Manila Comic Con this August 2009. As you might've already guessed from the preview image on the left, the book is released through Gilbert Monsanto's Sacred Mountain Publications, the same imprint that realeases the team book Bayan Knights (which Boy Ipis is part of). Ofcourse, art duties are handled by Gilbert Monsanto himself while Paul Michael Ignacio handles the story. And I must say, the guy knows what he's doing. The rogues gallery he created for Boy Ipis alone says it all. Plus, Amy Vidal's Phantom Cat guest stars.

Another TV season is over and as we head to summer territory with the return of faves Burn Notice (06.04.09) and Leverage (07.15.09), let us skip ahead ala Flash Forward (story below) and take a look at the coming 2009-2010 season for new and interesting shows to keep an eye on.

V. This is a re-imagining (ala BSG) of the 80's TV series by the producers of The 4400. And we all know how good that television series was. It's about the events that happen after the world is suddenly visited by extra-terrestrials who claim to come in peace. Plus, the series boasts a cast of actors from our favorite genre shows: Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet on Lost), Joel Gretsch (Tom Baldwin on The 4400), Laura Vandervoort (Kara on Smallville), Morena Baccarin and Alan Tudyk (Inara and Wash on Firefly). When they wake up, everyone is left wondering if what they saw will actually happen. The cast includes Sonya Walger (Penny on Lost) and John Cho.

Vampire Diaries. Years after its predecessor TheWB cancelled ANGEL, vampires are now back into TheCW fold. This one is about two vampire brothers -- one good and one evil -- and the young girl who is the object of their passion. It stars Paul Wesley (Fallen) and Ian Somerhalder (Lost) as Stefan and Damon Salvatore and Nina Dobrev as Elena Gilbert. It's paired with Supernatural (with Smallville getting the boot to Fridays), let's just hope the series delves into more mythology than romance.

Melrose Place. TheCW ressurects another franchise from the grave. Hopefully it wouldn't turn into another 90210. Okay, okay, maybe 90210 got better after I stopped watching (and since Rebecca Rand Kirshner took control). Anyhow, according to Ausiello, this Melrose relaunch which stars Katie Cassidy (Supernatural) and Ashlee Simpson offers a more engaging pilot than its sister show. Let's cross our fingers.

Glee. I've already covered this one. It's already on my must-watch list. It's an underdog story about a High School show choir. But if you're not yet convinced, here is its talented cast performing a cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin" from the pilot. SPOILER

Human Target. Based on a DC comics character, Mark Valley (Fringe) stars as Christopher Chance, a man who becomes a human target. However this time around, Chance no longer assumes the client's identity (ala Dollhouse), instead he becomes an unassuming bystander who is ready to put himself directly on the line of fire to protect in order to protect them.

WTF: Buffy Without Joss?

I never thought this day would happen. I never thought that I could say NO to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. But HELL-freaking-NO! According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Kuzui's are planning to do a reboot of Buffy the Vampire Slayer without Joss Whedon. This is the stupidest idea of all time! These are same f*cking idiots who butchered Whedon's work and gave us the 1992 Kristy Swanson bomb. I've said in the past that I somehow enjoyed the cheesyness of that film. But for the love of God, after watching 7 seasons (8 if count the comics) of Joss Whedon beloved series, why in the blue hell would anyone want to watch the Kuzui's reboot?

Calming down... It's not that reboots don't work. Look at Nolan's Batman, the new Star Trek or James Bond. These work because the people who made it respected the characters in the franchise. Plus in the case of Star Trek and Bond, it was already Star Trek 11 and Bond 21. But to make a Buffy movie without the characters the fans have grown to love? We already know what the Kuzui's did the first time. This is a slap on the face of the fandom. And the Whedonverse. And Joss Whedon and his talented writers and actors. I think that this will be the first time that the fans would want 20th Century FOX to intervene. A Buffy movie without Whedon. Blasphemy.

I can't stop watching this video. Call it my viral video of the day. It's a fan-made trailer by Jaron Pitts which I grabbed from YouTube (in case it gets pulled). Hit play first. I recognized some of the clips he spliced but man it is still pretty damn cool! I only wish they cast Nathan Fillion for the real GREEN LANTERN movie but that won't happen. Damn. THE PREMISE: When the McKinley High School Glee Club director is fired, Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) volunteers to take over the Show Choir. He plans on reinventing the club and challenging a group of outcasts to realize their star potential. It's not an easy task when the pitch-imperfect club includes Mercedes (Amber Riley), a forceful diva-in-training; Arty (Kevin McHale), a geeky guitarist; Kurt (Chris Colfer), a dramatic soprano; Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), a punk rocker; and self-proclaimed 'star' Rachel (Lea Michele), a perfectionist firecracker.

I just caught the show's pilot today. It was a sneak peak as the show wouldn't start airing on FOX until next season. I was very impressed! Clearly Popular and Nip/Tuck creator Ryan Murphy knows what he is doing. As you may have guessed the show's a musical. No, they don't burst into song for no apparent reason (not that there's something wrong with that). The musical numbers appear during the performances of the club. And the music is awesome. Just wait until you hear them cover Journey's "Don't Stop Believing". This is one show I'll be adding to my must watch list.
